Replacing a founder in any organization is not easy, and particularly difficult in a charity. People get involved in a charity because they feel passionately about the impact of the charity, and often want to get deeply involved. The key is getting everyone to focus both on the role they need to play, and the best way to leverage the strengths of each person. First, clarify the role of the CEO and leadership team of the charity…showing that they are responsible for delivering the vision. Then, clarify the role of the trustees to help the CEO with this role, and provide both the external links, and internal sounding board to ithe CEO deliver the vision faster. You can alive individual trustees to specific initiatives with the responsibilities to enable the organization to move forward faster on their own. Getting the trustees to see their roles as coaches vs managers is key.
